As older people are at an increased risk of severe illness, NHS and Government guidance advises that older people need to be particularly stringent in following social distancing and staying at home.

As older people are at an increased risk of severe illness, NHS and Government guidance advises that older people need to be particularly stringent in following social distancing and staying at home.

This means older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation during the coronavirus outbreak. Social distancing and self-isolation means that most older people are cut off from their friends, family and support networks, which can have a serious effect on their mental health and wellbeing, especially for older people who live alone. It is very important that older people look after their mental health during the pandemic and that we support them in staying connected.

If you are an older person who is feeling lonely, or are concerned about your mental health and wellbeing, it is very important that you reach out for help. NHS services and other organisations are still available should you need support:

  • NHS website has advice for how older people can stay connected with others here  
  • Age UK has a series of resources available about how older people can look after their mental health. Age UK also operates a befriending service and an advice line should you need support or someone to talk to. Find out more  
  • GP practices are still available and offering online or telephone appointments. If you are worried about your mental health, you can contact your GP who can offer support and refer you to the appropriate services.
  • HPFT offers a range of services for older people with mental health needs. Look on their website here
