IVF Treatment Returns
Background to the decision
At the time it was made clear that the decision was motivated due to the need to save money, and put it out of kilter with the other CCG within Hertfordshire, East and North Herts CCG. This lead to what is often described as a ‘post code lottery’, with some families within Hertfordshire being able to receive a course of IVF treatment on the NHS whilst another family, who may live close by but separated by an invisible line, were denied it.
Recent changes
However, a few days ago HVCCG, which covers patients in Watford, St Albans & Harpenden, Hertsmere, Three Rivers, and Dacorum, reversed the decision. At the time they had promised to review the situation in a year, and that review has led to them reinstating treatment within their area.
Kathryn Magson, Chief Executive of Herts Valleys CCG said:
"The consultation we undertook in 2017 gave us a clear view that many people are keen for us to make routine funding of IVF available on the NHS for people who meet our clinical criteria.
“This year, we have continued to maintain a strong financial position. When we reviewed the policy six months ago, we were concerned about the pressures the NHS may face during this winter period, but we have managed these pressures. After delivering two years of financial balance, the CCG is now in a position where it can reinvest in services like this."
We welcome this decision. Parity of services across the county make things straightforward and easier to access. Not only that but, at the time of the consultation, the people of Hertfordshire made it clear that they wanted IVF to be provided to those who needed it. We’re happy to see the HVCCG are now in the position to reflect this and offer a much needed and valued service.
